This neurological response is why many remote workers report feeling physically exhausted after an hour-long virtual meeting, despite sitting still in a chair.
The core issue lies in the cognitive load required to navigate 3D spaces. When you reach out to grab a virtual object or turn your head to look at a colleague’s avatar, your vestibular system and proprioceptive senses are actively engaged. However, because your body remains stationary, a sensory mismatch occurs. This disconnect forces your brain to work harder to reconcile the visual input with the lack of physical movement, leading to mental strain and physical symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, and general lethargy. This is often referred to as “cybersickness,” a variant of motion sickness triggered by the lag between expected and actual sensory feedback.
To mitigate these effects, experts recommend adopting a “digital hygiene” routine. First, limit VR sessions to thirty-minute blocks. The brain’s capacity for high-intensity sensory processing is finite, and breaks are essential for recovery. During these breaks, engage in “grounding” activities. Look at distant objects to relax your eye muscles, and perform simple physical stretches to reset your proprioception. Walking around your physical space helps re-establish the connection between your mind and body, reducing the disorientation caused by prolonged immersion.
Furthermore, adjust your hardware settings. Ensure your refresh rate is high enough to prevent motion blur, and adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD) on your headset to match your eyes perfectly. Misaligned lenses can cause significant strain. Finally, incorporate natural lighting into your virtual workspace. Even if you are wearing a headset, having a bright, naturally lit room behind you can help regulate your circadian rhythm and reduce the feeling of isolation that often exacerbates fatigue.
